Lasik

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Interesting read on Lasik. As my patients know, I am one of the eye doctors who decided to have Lasik done to his eyes and I am a Lasik advocate.

I had Lasik done back in the spring of 1997. For the most part, I have been very satisfied with my results. Dry eyes has been a problem that has become more notable in the last two years, and I confess to my ocassional use of glasses for reading (because of old age) and distance (normal surgical regression), but for the most part, my dependence on eyeglasses and contacts has been minimized. In counseling prospectice refractive surgery patients, it is imperative that expectations to results be fully understood on behalf of the patient, and the consulting physician as well as the surgeon have to be clear on the limitations of the technology.

Ok, so I read this news http://www.fwbusinesspress.com/display.php?id=11760 and was surprised!

I think this is innovative and resourceful, in essence a patient has to feel comfortable with the doctor that provides the service.

What will replace LASIK? Keraflex?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Ok, so every day a few patients ask me about what is new in lasik. These are exciting times as the technology is changing and here comes Avedro’s Keraflex procedure. It is a form of C3-R better known as Corneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (yes the vitamin!) which has been performed for some time.

The amazing thing is that this is an alternative to LASIK, and one for those who would never consider surgery. The Keraflex procedure is not surgery. As per the website “it is a non-incisional, non-invasive procedure currently under clinical study for the correction of myopia and the treatment of keratoconus“. This is very cool since it does not cut the eye or remove any eye tissue hence minimizing the risk of complications or surgical induced errors.

You can see the procedure performed here. KeraFlex video
